The Royal Scotsman Train, has a new luxury Sleeper Carriage Heron. Belmond’s iconic train travels through the glorious Scottish Highlands in complete style.

Our Work on Heron

We are very honoured to have our work on The Royal Scotsman sleeper carriage Heron. An exquisite train carriage consisting of three Grand Suites, all decked out in quartered European walnut burr veneer, with handmade banding and handmade Marquetry. Using the same traditional methods and techniques as we did on the original 1930s Pullman Cars.

Marquetry Panels

Each suite is decked out with marquetry wall panels, unique in design, veneers all individually picked to bring style and warm to the surroundings. A wide range of veneers are in the marquetry panels, including Walnut, green Lacewood, Birch Masur and Willow.

Birch and green veneer banding

The birch and dyed green veneer banding is made up from Birch Masur and dyed olive green veneer, the two veneers are cut into lengths and attached to each other, creating the stripes.

Quartered European Walnut Burr Panels

All the European walnut burr veneer panels in the three suites are handmade. We join the veneer together in quarters as this creates the unique and spectacular design pattern. Because the veneer pattern changes quite dramatically throughout the bundles, before starting we plan where each panel will sit. This is to make sure the veneer runs correctly throughout the suite.
